Ik heb het niet zo op Michael Jackson. Niet op zijn muziek want die is me veel te glad, en al zeker niet hoe de 'man' de laatste jaren in het nieuws kwam.
De laatste dagen maakt Jackson zijn comeback bekend en zijn management liet weten dat hij weer 'helemaal gezond' zou zijn. Hoe gezond bleek afgelopen nacht.
Personeel van zijn hotel in Londen doet een boekje open. Zo schijnt hij, alsof hij stomdronken was, uren als een zombie door het hotel te gezwalkt te hebben en moest hij door zijn guards overeind gehouden worden. Vrienden van Michael, ja...hij heeft ze blijkbaar nog, vertelden vervolgens dat het kwam door een combi van jetlag, slapeloosheid en plankenkoorts vanwege zijn aangekondige optredens. Alsof zombie zijn niet genoeg was, raakte de 50-jarige brother vervolgens in paniek en zag zich genoodzaakt een aantal keren naar zijn 79-jarige moeder in de VS te bellen.
Aan de suite van 8.350 euro per nacht zal het niet gelegen hebben, waar het wel precies aan ligt, kunnen we alleen maar naar gissen. Waar we niet naar hoeven te gissen is dat het blijkbaar nog steeds ´bad´met hem gaat, dat het leven van de man nog steeds een ´thriller´ is en dat hij, naar mijn idee, nog verre van gezond is. Duidelijk gevalletje van Peter-Pan Syndroom lijkt me.

Dat de man muziek maakte waarvan ik me voor kan stellen dat veel mensen zoals jij die (erg) goed vinden, is prima, ieder zijn ding. Er zijn tenslotte ook veel mensen die van Andre Hazes hielden en mensen die helemaal uit hun dak gaan bij de Toppers. Maar dat wil nog niet zeggen dat ik de man niet een vreemde snuiter mag (mocht) vinden, zijn gedrag niet helemaal snap (snapte) en dat zijn muziek niet de mijne is (was).
Ik heb in mijn eigen woorden het nieuws beschreven waar alle kranten mee vol stonden. Ik heb dus geen "ongegrond" commentaar, het merendeel van de mensheid snapte niet waar de man mee bezig was.
Mensen die mij daarna als "eng" beschrijven, de ondertitel van mijn blog niet gezien hebben, die blijkbaar de humor in mijn stukjes niet snappen en waarschijnlijk alleen enkel dit stukje gelezen hebben, zijn eigenlijk best wel eng. In ieder geval veel sterkte met het verwerken van jouw verlies.

In 1984, Michael suffered severe second-degree burns to his head after his hair caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi ad. MJ received a $1.5 million dollar payment from the company which he donated to the Brotman Medical Center in California. The burn unit is called the Michael Jackson Burn Center and provides new technology to help people with severe burns. In the same year he and his brothers performed the "Victory Tour" and Michael donated his $5 million payment to charity.
In 1985, Michael and his good friend Lionel Richie co-wrote what became one of the biggest-selling singles of all time, 'We Are the World', to help aid the poor in Africa and the US. Almost 20 million copies sold and millions of dollars were donated to famine relief.
Michael Jackson supported 39 charities which gave him a place in the Guinness Book of Records for "Most Charity Support by a Pop Star". They included charities for alcohol and drug abuse, children with cancer, aid for developing countries, AIDS, funding for African-American students, freeing of captive dolphins, underprivileged children and more.
He also founded the Heal the World Foundation in 1992 — inspired by his charity song 'Heal the World' — to provide medicine to children and to fight world hunger, homelessness, child exploitation and abuse. He was known to send blankets, food and medicine to developing countries, to invite underprivileged children to experience Neverland or visit them in hospital if they were sick or dying. In October 1996, he visited a hospital for mentally challenged children in Taiwan and offered them 2000 free tickets to his sold-out concert.
As well as his unrivalled support for charities around the world, Michael Jackson successfully broke down racial barriers in entertainment — as was highlighted at his memorial service. Before the Jackson 5 appeared there were limited opportunities for black performers in the mainstream entertainment industry. MJ appealed to a worldwide audience and paved the way for future black singers, performers and TV stars.
As the Rev Al Sharpton so aptly stated: "Because Michael Jackson kept going, he created a comfort level, where people that felt they were separate became interconnected with his music. And it was that comfort level that kids from Japan and Ghana and France and Iowa and Pennsylvania got comfortable enough with each other, until later it wasn't strange to us to watch Oprah on television. It wasn't strange to watch Tiger Woods golf.
Those young kids grew up from being teenage, comfortable fans of Michael to being 40 years old and being comfortable to vote for a person of colour to be the president of the United States of America."
So as the world says goodbye to the greatest entertainer of all time, I hope they take some time to look back at the good he did. Because while we all like to focus on the drama, the scandal, the "dirt", everyone has some good in them — and Michael Jackson definitely had more than most of us. RIP MJ.
Ik zou trouwens ook niet al te lang treuren. Zijn kids doen dat blijkbaar ook niet meer en lijken al over het verlies heen...
